(Not interested, just wondering) Is the battery old and therefore crap, or was it just always crap? I don't use laptops so I don't know what's "normal"

If ASUS isn't able to fix mine, I may take you up on it. I should know in a day or two.

The battery is a bit old, but it still performs at 70% of original capacity.

2 hours of actual use is pretty typical, unless you have a low voltage processor (ultrabook, netbook, etc). A brand new high-capacity battery will get you 3.5-4 hours in the average laptop. Most laptop batteries are 'estimated' to give you 3 hours from the manufacturer.

Nibby-san, senpai-san, can you find an ultra-bay hdd adapter for an ASUS M50sv? and also do you have any 8GB DDR2 kits for said ASUS M50sv?

8GB DDR2 kits are so not worth it. I don't have one, they're a complete ripoff. Here's the caddy, ordered several from this seller and they all work like a charm. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2nd-SATA-H…

hmm I'm trying to stretch the life out of my now 7 year old Asus, so I can save up for some ridiculous MSI later this year or early next year.

I'm going to get an ssd and put the old five hundo in an ultrabay. Was thinking if I bumped up the ram it woul d improve and last longer.

Have you played around with windows 10 yet? I got a Dev pre-release through work to play around with on some VMs on my workstation/server.

Ya I messed with it a bunch in a VM but I'd prefer to really give it a whirl when it is official.

For your Asus, tell me what processor you have... and how much RAM. You should bump it up to 4GB RAM (2x2GB) if it is not there already. SSD in the main bay + HD in the 2nd bay and you'll find that machine will kick ass for email, surfing, etc.

core 2 duo I believe 2.53 T9300?? Can't go see right now, I have the pack all bedded down for the night. 2x2GB GSkill (can't remember the speed, but I did upgrade from the stock setup) and 500Gb HDD. Its our media center and runs like a top plays 1080p bluray mkv on a semi regular basis. It was beastly when I bought it in 2007-8? But getting a little long in the tooth and I would like to do some preventative maintenance.

Power wise I can use my work laptop for anything that needs serious resources (lenovo w510 - i7 2.7ghz w/16gb ddr3 Samsung 850 evo 120 GB ssd and nvidia quadro 1100 1gb video card) and the wife has a macbook pro but rarely uses it for anything besides amazon prime and looking at photos.

Agreed on the 10, but it did fix a hotkey error that turned off my bluetooth on my w510

A T9400 is already sufficient and not really worth the money to upgrade to a T9600 or T9800. Those get pricy and you won't notice the performance increase.

The best thing to do is put an SSD in it and buy an HD caddy to throw your HD in. Start with a fresh install of Windows and follow this guide http://www.overclock.net/t/1156654/sean…

You'll be all set.

Thanks for the input. I run my company's network, just curious if you had any pointers for updated aging laptops to last for at least another year. I am not considering a Gigabyte laptop against the previously mentioned MSI Ghost-066

That hdd caddy you showed me on ebay, does he have a normal websit eto buy through? I got burned badly by Paypal and ebay back in 2007 by buying a camera while in Iraq and they wouldn't ship itrefunded to paypal minus restocking fee and then my identity got stolen for a bit, along with many moneys and debts

I'd get the MSI cause it's lighter and the gigabyte is probably not built as well. That msi you linked is ridiculously overpriced. Buy one with dedicated graphics and an HD and 1080p screen... Then buy ram and m.2 ssd separately

As long as it is a 2.5" drive yeah (assuming this is a laptop)

Desktops can take both 3.5" and 2.5" drives

Good. My HDD is failing and I'm gonna use it as an excuse for an SSD upgrade.
